PERU: OverviewPeru Overview | Current Projects | Publications | Feature Stories
Since 1980, Pathfinder has worked with the public and private health sectors of Peru to establish, expand, and improve the quality of family planning, reproductive health, and maternal and child health service delivery.
Peru has made enormous strides over the last 30 years in the growth of its economy and the development of its public health sector. Thanks to great improvements in the availability and quality of reproductive health and family planning services, Peru has seen its fertility rate drop from 6.5 births per woman in 1969 to 2.6 today.
Nonetheless, great disparities in access to quality health care services still exist. Well equipped health facilities and trained personnel are heavily concentrated in middle-class urban areas, particularly metropolitan Lima. The overcrowded settlements at Lima’s periphery—products of urban migration—are increasingly underserved, as are many of the country’s geographically isolated areas in the Andes and the Amazon basin. The reproductive health consequences of poor access to basic health care, low modern contraceptive use, and high rates of unsafe abortion are particularly serious for these high-risk populations.

Current and Recent Projects in Peru
Improving Health for Peruvians: In direct partnership with USAID, Pathfinder works to train health providers, foster awareness of health care issues among communities and schools, and ensure national standards of care through the accreditation and certification of medical schools and professionals.
HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis Prevention and Control: Pathfinder works as part of a strategic Global Fund partnership to promote advocacy for HIV/AIDS prevention and universal antiretroviral treatment.
Anonymous Heroes—Saving Mothers' Lives Award: An award given annually by Pathfinder to honor organizations in Peru making significant contributions to the reduction of maternal mortality and the promotion of women’s health.
The Vermell Center for Integrated Health: Pathfinder recently partnered with the Vermell Center in Lima, which provides reproductive health services, including life-saving postabortion care, to some of Peru's neediest populations.
